WEST VALLEY CITY — West Valley police are asking for the public’s help in gathering information about the fatal shooting of an Ogden man at a West Valley apartment complex Tuesday night.
Xavier Bernal, 20, was shot at the Redwood apartments, 4000 S. Redwood Road. Police say he drove to the complex with a woman and a boy in an SUV. The relationship between the trio was unknown Wednesday. Detectives believe Bernal went to the complex to meet with someone for an unknown reason, but it was not known Wednesday if the person Bernal was meeting lived in one of the apartments or chose the parking lot just as a place to meet, said West Valley police spokeswoman Roxeanne Vainuku.
Bernal got out of the SUV to meet that person and walked out of sight from the others. When he came back, the other two discovered that he had been shot. He got inside his vehicle and collapsed as the others drove him to a local hospital where he died from his injuries.
Vainuku said the first time police were notified about the incident was after Bernal had died. No one from the apartment complex called 911 or reported hearing shots, she said. Investigators believe the shooting happened outside.
Detectives are now asking tenants and residents in that area to check their doorbell cameras to see if anything was recorded between 8 p.m. and 9 p.m. Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call police at 801-840-4000.
