INDIANAPOLIS — Two people were shot and killed Thursday on the near east side of Indianapolis, according to the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department.
Just before noon, police were called to an apartment in the 200 block of North Walcott Street — near State Avenue and Washington Street — on a report of a person shot.
IMPD said officers arrived to find two men with gunshot wounds — one in the apartment’s common area and the other in an apartment unit. Both were pronounced dead at the scene.
The coroner’s office identified the victims as 50-year-old Larry Moorman and 23-year-old Shawn Barnett.
“It puts you on edge because it’s across the street from me. It puts you on edge because they don’t know what happened,” said neighbor Charlie Robinson.
Charlie lives just a few doors away from the scene.
She said she recently moved to the neighborhood and doesn’t know the victims but hopes police are able to find justice.
“I’m really sorry for the family. It’s never good to see people lose their life. It is crazy,” said Robinson.
“Certainly for the members of the community who live here, it’s a tragic situation,” said IMPD Lt. Shane Foley. “Regardless of the circumstances, it’s two lives lost and two families that will have to deal with this tragedy.”
IMPD Lt. Foley said the motive for the double homicide remains unclear. Police are still trying to figure out what led to the shooting.
Neighbors said they didn’t see or hear anything suspicious leading up to the violence.
After the shooting, one witness claimed they gave police video of a car driving away from the scene.
Officers were able to locate that car and a person of interest near 79th and Michigan. Police quickly detained that person for questioning. Two hours after the deadly shooting, police arrested 42-year-old Jermaine Randle.
“We’re thankful for witness cooperation. I’ve said before, the more often we have witness cooperation the more likely we are to find the person or persons involved in this violence,” said Foley.
Anyone with information about this incident should call Detective Larry Craciunoiu at the IMPD Homicide Office at 317-327-3475 or email the detective at Larry.Craciunoiu@indy.gov. The public can also submit anonymous tips through Crime Stoppers of Central Indiana at 317-262-8477.
